Team insights
Our expert Principal Groom Artist Tomos Hywel Evans led the out-of-this-world project. He described the experience as an ‘absolute dream come true’ to officially contribute to a Bethesda title. Bethesda’s games shaped and solidified Hywel’s passion and drove him to pursue a career in the games industry.
”I have nothing but the deepest gratitude to Airship, my team members and Bethesda for making this a reality. I will never forget that incredible moment when I saw our names when the credits rolled.”
-Tomos Hywel Evans, Principal Groom Artist.
How was it was working for Bethesda?
“It was an incredible experience to work with such a beloved studio that has played a key role in shaping western role-playing games. They asked us to create every groom asset for their latest project, Starfield, from hair to beards. The team at Bethesda that handled outsourcing were very passionate and kind and it was a privilege to work with them to contribute to this new universe. The first original franchise from Bethesda in 25 years. We were honoured to be entrusted with this task and everyone involved truly gave it their best. The project for us lasted several months and Bethesda continuously expressed their satisfaction with the hair assets we produced and overall, it was simply an amazing and fun project to work on all throughout.”
What was your favourite part of working on this project?
“For me, my favourite part about the project was simply knowing that I was making official assets for a Bethesda title. That gave me all the motivation I needed and that of the team as well. There were many other highlights throughout this project such as seeing the satisfaction from my teammates when they completed the more complex hair tasks, getting to create a diverse range of hairstyles such as short, long, wavy, curly, afro, dreadlocks, beards etc, and of course, seeing the final hairstyles in the game. I lost my mind when I realised that one my own hair assets was used for the ‘Adoring Fan’ character in the game. A character who also existed in the Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion. That was certainly a memorable moment for me.”
What did you learn from this project?
“Before we worked on Starfield, I had a few opportunities on prior projects where I demonstrated some leadership roles, but this was the first project where I was put fully in charge of from start to finish. This meant having to provide feedback and guidance to my teammates while ensuring we were hitting the quality bar and deadlines on time. I learned a lot about what it takes to manage a team of incredible artists while also creating my own hair assets for the game. I also learned the vital importance of dedicating plenty of time for initial planning stages, dissecting every hair asset and figuring out the best approach for each asset. This in return resulted in a smooth workflow where everyone understood the assignment and we kept strong communication with each other and helped each other out whenever needed. It was a huge team effort. We also had a team dedicated to fitting the hair assets onto the character heads, ensuring that they’d fit perfectly on all head shapes in the character creator. Without them, we would not have been able to complete the project.”
